Mumbai (Pak News) A single order placed by famous Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma transformed the fortunes of a restaurant that was drowning in debt.
According to Indian media reports, the restaurant ‘Delhi Se’ located in Mumbai’s Chembur area was opened in October 2021 by two brothers, Jaspal Singh Khalsa and Mahendar Singh Khalsa. Initially, the establishment was a tiny 250-square-foot shop featuring just three tables with seating for only nine people.
Sales began to decline within months of opening; by September 2022, the brothers had accumulated a debt of approximately ₹18 lakh, and the situation had become so dire that they had decided to shut down the business. That same month, popular stand-up comedian Abhishek Upmanyu visited the restaurant and, highly praised the dish in an Instagram story.
Following the comedian’s post, the number of customers began to rise sharply. It was through Upmanyu’s Instagram story that Anushka Sharma learned about the restaurant; she had been looking for “chole bhature” with authentic Delhi flavors in Mumbai for her husband, cricketer Virat Kohli.
Anushka Sharma ordered two plates to be delivered to her home in the Juhu area of Mumbai. Regarding this, the restaurant owner, Jaspal Singh, recounted receiving a call one day with an order to deliver two plates of Chole Bhature to Juhu.
He mentioned that at the time, a single plate cost only 120 rupees, and the travel cost to Juhu exceeded the price of the order itself; consequently, the caller assured him she would pay extra delivery charges and asked for bank account details to transfer the money.
Jaspal Singh admitted that when the woman requested his bank details, he suspected it might be a prank or a scam. She called several times, but he remained hesitant to share the information until she finally revealed that she was calling from Virat Kohli’s residence.
He expressed his disbelief that food was being ordered for such a prominent cricketer’s home from his modest shop. Jaspal Singh added that after the delivery, he received another call asking him to check Anushka Sharma’s Instagram post.
In her post, the actress happily shared that her quest to find Chole Bhature in Mumbai that matched the Delhi style had finally succeeded; she also thanked Abhishek Upmanyu for recommending the restaurant.
Jaspal Singh noted that within just half an hour of Anushka Sharma’s post appearing, a massive crowd gathered outside the restaurant… A crowd gathered, leaving my brother and me astonished.
They recounted that a crowd so large gathered outside the restaurant that the police had to be called to bring the situation under control. According to Jaspal Singh and Mahendar Singh, they now operate four branches of their restaurant in Mumbai, selling over 3,000 plates daily across all locations; monthly sales, which stood at a mere 100,000 to 150,000 rupees during difficult times, have now surged to approximately 20 million rupees.
